Diabetic Retinopathy
is an eye problem caused
by diabetes mellitus. It affects the retina, which is light-sensitive
tissue at the back of the eye.
Diabetic Retinopathy, the
primary ophthalmic micro vascular complication of DM, is the leading
cause of blindness in working-age Americans (25–64 years).
However,
severe vision problems could be prevented by: good control of the
diabetes and blood pressure, regular eye exams, stop smoking, early
treatment for retinopathy.
High
blood sugar levels damage small blood vessels. The weakened blood
vessels may break and leak fluid and blood. Also, new abnormal blood
vessels may grow. These new blood vessels can bleed, cause cloudy
vision, and destroy the retina.
“The
majority of diabetic patients lose vision because they delay ocular
examinations. The key for vision preservation in diabetics is routine
examinations to detect the earliest signs of retinopathy”.
